Establishing A Vision

Page history last edited by Dr. Phil Clark 9 years, 11 months ago

Vision:

Vision instills in an organization a sense of direction.  In schools, vision is about outcomes.  It is the ends of education.  In other words, what is it we want our students to know and be able to do when they leave our school.  Vision presents a realistic, credible, attractive future for our students--a future more desirable in significant ways than current conditions.  It is a target to be reached.

"An effective vision statement articulates a vivid picture of the organization's future that is so compelling that a school's members will be motivated to work together to make it a reality."

                                                                           (Dufour & Eaker, 1998)

Power Point

I created this power point a couple of years ago when I worked with Horace Mann Middle School.

Evaluating the Vision Statement

Effective visions are:

  • Imaginable--they convey a picture of what the future will look like.
  • Desirable--they appeal to the long-term interests of stakeholders.
  • Feasible--they comprise realistic, attainable goals.
  • Focused--they are clear enough to provide guidance in decision making.
  • Flexible--they are general enough for individual initiative and changing responses in light of changing conditions.
  • Communicable--they are easy to communicate and explain.

A Vision for the 21st Century

My vision is that every student graduating from the Berryville School District is career and college ready, having obtained the necessary social, emotional, cognitive, technological, collaborative, communication, and leadership skills to be productive learners and citizens in a 21st century global village.

What is your vision for 21st century schooling?  What is your vision for our district?
